TIME MANAGEMENT

Time management tips for a busy Equestrian

One of the biggest issues in modern society is that we are always too busy. Too busy for our family, too busy for a consistent sports routine as well as for our hobbies.

As a business owner and equestrian, I know the struggle really well.  Horseback riding is definitely a VERY time-consuming hobby. In most big cities horse clubs are usually located in the countryside, so on average, you can end up spending up to 2 hours trying to get there.

Things turn out to be even harder when you have your own horse. It's certainly a big responsibility and commitment as you can’t just “skip” seeing your own horse. I find it really sad when horse owners kind of “let go” their own horse to the barn manager/trainer.

In this article, I would like to share some tips on time management for equestrians.

SET YOUR GOALS

Think about your riding goals. How many trainings would you like to do a week? By how much would you like to improve? Is there a riding test/show you would like to be able to compete in?

Understanding these basic goals and being realistic with them will definitely help you define that “right” amount of time you are willing to dedicate to your hobby/sport.

PRIORITIZE

Write down a list of things you need to do on a certain day. Remove the ones, that are not that important. First place on the list should be the hardest task. Psychologically its easier to do the task that makes you procrastinate in the morning rather than in the evening. Put the easiest task at the end.

DETERMINE YOUR RIDING DAYS

In your calendar/planner highlight the days you would like to go riding. Is it morning or evening for you? Make sure you don't have anything important right after the riding class, cause you will probably be a little tired.

FOR ALL HORSE OWNERS: SHOP ONLINE!

Nowadays online shopping is becoming extremely time-efficient! It can actually save you hours! You can order groceries, meals, clothes and… tack online! Check out our online equestrian boutique here.

Order now and get your stuff in just three days!

KEEP TRACK OF YOUR MOBILE PHONE USAGE

Nowadays “digital health” is available on most smartphones. Keep track of how much you spend scrolling through your Instagram feed.

Be more conscious about it. Sometimes I would go to do something important for our brand’s Instagram and 30 minutes later will find myself looking at horse fails videos… Sounds familiar?

Also don’t check your email/WhatsApp every 5 minutes. You will most likely end up checking your Instagram feed as well :D

SET RULES

Dedicate a certain amount of times for pleasure and work/study. Write down all the things you do daily and then set a certain time amount for each of the items on the list. Keep a healthy balance between rest and work time.

MEAL TIMING FOR THE HORSE

If somebody is taking care of feeding your horse, coordinate with them and make sure you arrive at the barn at the right time. This way you don't have to wait till your horse finishes eating/drinking.

PICK THE LOW TRAFFIC TIMES

If you live in a big city, try to go to your horse club at low traffic times. This way you will save time for more important tasks then driving.

Finding a perfect routine can take some time. Don’t be afraid to shuffle some tasks and see what’s working best for you. Always have reminders and planners handy, so nothing important gets forgotten.
